About the edition print:
During the creation of her Opened Apples series, Gail Potocki lived in rural farmland in Michigan, and described being captivated by the vast fields of giant sunflowers surrounding her farm.
"In the fall," she says, "the bowed heads of these flowers evoked the haunting image of a solemn march toward death, I felt like it was an acceptance of fate."
In Buddhism, the sunflower represents spiritual enlightenment, its movement following the Sun mirroring humanity's journey toward self-realization. Gail was reminded of her visit to La Specola, a Museum of Zoology and Natural History in Florence, and the highly detailed wax anatomical mannequins in states of varying organ exposure.
Potocki combines the threads of these two experiences here to create a portrait of transcendence and power. The sunflower—a symbol of resilience,thriving equally in cultivated country fields and vacant urban lots—pushes Potocki's subject beyond the broken shell of the exhibition case, to rise and blossom beyond the confines of the boundaries which had failed in their attempt to encapsulate her.
